Countdown of the future opens in Rolleston
29 November 2011: Rolleston will see the opening of one of New Zealand’s most modern supermarket concepts on Wednesday as the new Countdown Rolleston welcomes its first customers.
The supermarket has many new features that in the future will be commonplace in all Countdown stores.
The 4,200sqm Countdown store on Rolleston Drive will be opened on Wednesday 30 November at 8:00am by the Mayor of Selwyn District, Kelvin Coe.
130 team members are employed in the new store, with 100 of those being brand new to the company.
Countdown Rolleston Store Manager Chris Watkins said the supermarket features a focus on fresh food and green technology.
“The store is spacious with wide aisles throughout and has a large area devoted to our bakery, deli, meat, seafood and produce departments,” Mr Watkins said.
“We have set about creating a food market which brings customers into the fresh area, inspires meal ideas, provides a wide choice of healthy options and delivers a huge range of grocery lines at great prices.
“Some old fashioned features have made a comeback, including traditional fresh produce weighing scales to help shoppers choose the right amount for their family. Clear pricing signage throughout the fresh area also allows customers to easily seek out the best value choices,” Mr Watkins said.
Countdown Rolleston will offer more than 21,000 product lines, including the well known Select, Signature Range and Home Brand ranges. The store also offers a range of healthy-living products under Countdown’s new Macro Wholefoods Market brand.
The store has 19 checkouts available, including six express checkouts and five self-serve checkouts which allow customers to scan and pay for their shopping themselves.
The store also features a range of environmental initiatives. “Energy efficient lighting is used throughout the store reducing the amount of power used. Meanwhile, blinds descend over the fresh produce fridges at night trapping the cold air inside,” said Mr Watkins.
“Sliding covers on freezers and heat reclaim off the refrigeration coils will also help minimize the store’s carbon footprint.”
Mr Watkins said the team at Countdown Rolleston are looking forward to being actively involved in the local community.
“We will be raising funds every year as part of our Countdown Kids Hospital Appeal for the children’s ward at Christchurch hospital,” he said.
“We’ll also be kicking off our support to the local community with contributions to local charities including the Salvation Army and Rolleston Fire Service.”
Countdown Rolleston will open seven days from 7:00am to 9:00pm. The store offers convenient parking with over 200 car parks and there is a bus stop outside the supermarket.
