Countdown staff vie for Trainee of the Year awards
The search is on to find Countdown’s HomeGrown Trainees of the Year, with the final stage of a nationwide competition being held today in Auckland.
More than 60 team members from Countdown’s supermarkets and logistics and customer care support functions from around New Zealand have been nominated as finalists in the annual competition. The team members were selected from 1,000 eligible trainees in the company.
The awards recognise the dedication and hard work that comes with completing a certificate, apprenticeship or training programme with Countdown. Award categories include excellence in meat and bakery apprenticeships, seafood retail training, logistics, customer service and department management training.
Gillian Davie, General Manager Human Resources for Countdown said there has been an excellent response to the call for nominations.
“This year’s crop of nominees reflects the many talented retailers we have at Countdown. Completing an apprenticeship or training programme on the job is no easy feat and we congratulate all our trainees on their achievements.”
Nominees will be put through their paces in the morning with a series of assessment activities at Progressive Enterprises support office in Mangere. The assessment includes an interview and presentation to a judging panel and a role play scenario.
In the afternoon, nominees will relax and enjoy an interactive cooking session by New Zealand MasterChef 2011 runner-up Jax Hamilton, held at Manukau Institute of Technology.
The winners of each category in the HomeGrown Trainee of the Year will be announced at a prize-giving ceremony at 4:00pm.
Ms Davie said all the stores and support offices had been extremely supportive of their nominees and were looking forward to congratulating the winners.
“The HomeGrown Trainee of the Year competition is about supporting and nurturing our staff members and growing their careers with Countdown. Every nominee is a deserving winner.”
