Woolworths Waiheke Re-opens at Reduced Capacity
Woolworths Waiheke re-opened today (Friday June 19) at reduced capacity, less than two weeks after a fire seriously damaged the supermarket. The store is open 9am-7pm seven days a week and is operating in an enclosed space about 40% as large as its original retail area. The "left" side of the store is undergoing major reconstruction.
"Our staff and an army of contractors have been working around the clock to get the store opened at reduced capacity. It's been a huge effort. We know that having the store closed has been a major inconvenience to the people of Waiheke, so we've pulled out all the stops to re-open what we can," said Dave Chambers, GM Supermarkets.
The store's reduced range includes: grocery, deli, frozen, meat, perishables, produce and bakery. This will be improved over the coming weeks.
In the meanwhile, Progressive will continue temporarily offering a free shuttle bus service from the downtown Ferry Building to the Foodtown on Quay Street and its online shopping to Waiheke residents; orders over $75 will be delivered free to WCH Ltd, 102 Ostend Road (previously, the service was not available to people on Waiheke Island). Progressive Enterprises hopes to re-open the Waiheke Woolworths to full capacity by 22 July.
Progressive also plans to open a new store on Waiheke, hopefully within 18-24 months at 13-19 Belgium Street, which is just a few minutes away from the existing Woolworths. With Council's support, the new-generation supermarket would be approximately 3,500-square-metres (over three times the size of the present supermarket), with approximately 170 car parks.
