1970s
1971
Woolworths acquired Self Help Supermarkets - New Zealand's first self-serve grocery chain - and rebranded the stores. This was a radical concept, as customers were now shoppers. No longer served by a single grocer behind the counter, they now shopped for their own products off the shelves.
1979
Woolworths (NZ) Ltd sold to L.D. Nathan, a wholesale and retail merchant that operated SuperValue (North Island) supermarkets. These stores had been partly owned by their operators, who were bought out. All stores were rebranded to Woolworths.
